Pepe Sacau is the President of Culturmar, the Galician Federation for Maritime and River Culture, which was founded in 1993. The organization emerged from a traditional boat gathering held in Ribeira (Galicia, Spain), with the mission of preserving, promoting, and revitalizing Galicia’s maritime heritage, including traditional boats that form an essential part of this legacy.
Under his leadership, Culturmar has focused on restoring traditional boats and typologies, conducting heritage research on coastal and maritime traditions, organizing regattas and joint exhibitions to celebrate these vessels, and promoting cultural associations in coastal towns.
Additionally, since January 2024, Pepe has been a member of the Executive Board of the European Maritime Heritage (EMH), furthering his commitment to safeguarding maritime culture on a European scale. Today, Culturmar represents 43 collectives, including sports, cultural, community, and ethnographic associations across Galicia.
