The Lisbon Declaration on a European Network of Heritage Harbours

On 13 January 2024, European Maritime Heritage (EMH) hosted a landmark seminar in Lisbon, bringing together stakeholders from across Europe to explore the urgent need for a unified European Network of Heritage Harbours. This collaborative effort, rooted in the spirit of the EMH Barcelona Charter, culminated in the adoption of the Lisbon Declaration—a visionary commitment to preserving and activating Europe's rich maritime legacy.

Heritage harbours are more than historical sites; they are vibrant hubs of cultural exchange, living museums, and symbols of Europe’s enduring relationship with its waterways. The Lisbon Declaration highlights the critical role these harbours play in promoting sustainable urban development, fostering cultural and economic vitality, and addressing global challenges like climate change through the activation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Declaration calls on governments, civil society, traditional boat owners, academics, and communities to unite in this effort. By creating a strong network, EMH aims to ensure that heritage harbours remain authentic, dynamic centers of heritage preservation and inclusive development for generations to come.

Join us and support the preservation of Europe's maritime heritage. Read the full Lisbon Declaration [here] and discover how you can contribute to this important initiative.
